History of the Penticton Soccer Club May Classic Tournament
First held in 1961, the tournament was played at Queens Park with four teams participating: Mount Pleasant Legion of Vancouver, Danubia of Vancouver, Grand Forks, and Penticton. It was organized by Charlie Goeckel, Les Roberts, Nick Holtz, Peter Osborne, Hermann Heyer, and Helmut Gedig and sponsored by Okanagan Testing Services and Kenco Millwork. With all tournament participants taking part, the dance, held at the Incola Hotel, was a great success! Mount Pleasant beat Danubai (8:0) in the “A” Championship and Penticton beat Grand Forks (1:0) in the “B” Championship.
By 1963 eight teams participated, including teams from Victoria, Prince George, the Lower Mainland, and Penticton. Lobbans F.C. of Vancouver beat Danubia (3:2) in the “A” Championship and Mount Pleasant Legion of Vancouver beat Prince George (3:2) in the “B” Championship.
With great success, the tournament quickly grew to 16 teams and became one of the best in Western Canada with provincial and Canadian champions from Alberta and BC taking part. For years such teams as Royal Oaks of Vancouver, Calgary United, Dutch Lions of Vancouver, Calgary Springer Kickers, Vancouver Fire Fighters, Nomads of Vancouver, Westminster Blues, and Nor Van S.C. came to Penticton.
